O’Neill Sea Odyssey’s Ocean Science Series, Thursday, March 25, 1 – 2 PM – Balloon pollution and what you can do about it with Katherine O’Dea and Save Our Shores: Katherine O’Dea is the Executive Director of Save Our Shores, a grassroots organization that works to protect the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, advocating for clean shores, healthy ocean habitats, and living waters.
Katherine has a background in holding plastic polluting industries accountable for their products, she has supported businesses in their efforts to become more sustainable, and she thinks balloons are bananas! Balloon pollution in Monterey Bay can entangle and trap animals, can be mistaken for prey food like jellies, and can be mistakenly consumed and harm our diverse ocean wildlife.
Katherine will share about her and her team’s efforts at Save Our Shores, and her career background and what has inspired her to take a strong stance against pollution. She will propose solutions to balloon pollution as we approach Mother’s Day, Easter, school graduation, and other celebrations where Save Our Shores has found an increase in this persistent litter item.
